    German Throwing Chestnuts

    • Wurfkastanien, a traditional children's game in Germany, consists of the throwing of chestnuts. Children can make their own toy by taking a horse chestnut and cutting a hole in one end of the chestnut. Poke a string through the hole and tie two pieces of crepe paper about 48 inches, or 120 cm, long crepe paper about halfway down to the string. Secure the knot and trim the edges of the crepe paper.

    Paper Bag Pinata For Fiesta

    • Pinatas are a fun addition to fiesta, Cinco de Mayo or any other celebration. Kids can make their own pinata with a simple paper bag. To make this toy, simply fill a paper bag half full with mixed candy, toys and other treats. Roll down the top and secure with staples. Poke two holes in the top to run a string for hanging. Decorate the outside of the bag with paints, markers or stickers. Tissue paper strips or streamers can be fringed and glued around the outside of the paper bag for additional decoration.

    Greek Mosaic

    • The ancient Greeks were famous for their artwork including mosaics. Mosaics are pieces of artwork, varying in size, formed from small pieces of rock, glass or paper. They can be placed in concrete, clay and even on paper. To make a mosaic, use various colored paper, cut into quarter-inch squares. Arrange the pieces in a decorative fashion on a plain, white piece of paper, creating a simple mosaic, resembling a pixilated photograph.

    Chinese New Year Dragon

    • Children can create their own Chinese dragon as they learn about the Chinese New Year and other aspects of Chinese culture. An egg carton can be transformed into a special dragon by separating the carton into individual cups. Paint the outside of each cup yellow and the inside of one cup black and allow to dry. Using bingo daubers or paint, decorate each yellow cup with brightly colored spots. In each yellow cup, poke two small holes directly across from each other on the sides. Using ribbon or yarn, lace the yellow cups together to create the dragon's body. At the end of the body, attach a small jingle bell and tie off the ribbon. Glue on the dragon's head with the black facing out to create the mouth. Attach a small, red felt tongue to the inside of the mouth and secure with glue. Glue two tiny pom-poms to the top of the dragon's head. Attach two wiggly eyes to the pom poms. Allow the finished dragon to dry completely.
