How to Install Garden Pavers

    • 1). Drive small wooden stakes into the ground in your garden or yard to outline where you want your garden paver walkway located. This allows you to plan for and determine how large the pathway will be, and ultimately how many pavers you will need for your project.

    • 2). Measure the width of the garden paver path and the length. Consider any corner or curves and speak with a sales representative at the store where you are purchasing the pavers. He will be able to provide you with estimation of how many pavers you will need to purchase.

    • 3). Purchase the amount of pavers you will need. Purchase extra if you want to make a border along the side of the pathway. You may need a heavy-duty vehicle to transport the pavers, especially if you have to purchase many of them.

    • 4). Dig out the area where the pavers will be placed. The depth of the area should be approximately equal to one-half the thickness of the pavers. This will allow the pavers to settle to flush with the ground, or protrude from the ground a tiny bit.

    • 5). Use a level to make sure the dug-out area is level, or that it slopes accordingly without making the pavers stick out oddly. You may want to test this by laying the pavers in the area. Remove the pavers and line the dug-out area with sheets of plastic; this prevents grass and weeds from growing in the cracks between the pavers.

    • 6). Start at one end of the dug-out area and begin to place the pavers. Create any pattern you want, but be sure to keep all edges of the pavers flush against one another. You will not be using mortar or cement to fill the holes, so you want all pavers to be as close together as possible.

    • 7). Use an appropriate saw and saw blade, or chisel and hammer, to cut edge pieces of pavers that extend past the edges of the pathway.
Sweep or rinse off the finished walkway.
