How to Replace the Compressor Belt on a 2000 GMC Sierra
- 1). Park the 2000 GMC Sierra in a safe working environment and open the hood. Locate the air conditioner compressor belt on the very bottom of the engine. The compressor belt is routed around the crankshaft pulley and the compressor pulley.
- 2). Turn the tensioner pulley, on the right hand side of the compressor pulley, clockwise with a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar and a metric socket to release the tension from the belt. Pull the belt off of the top of the tensioner pulley and slowly release the breaker bar until the tensioner stops moving.
- 3). Slide the compressor belt out of the two pulleys and around the fan blades. Pull the belt out of the engine area and hold it next to the new belt to ensure the proper width and length of the new belt.
- 4). Route the new belt around each fan blade and around the crankshaft pulley and the air conditioner compressor pulley.
- 5). Turn the tensioner clockwise with the breaker bar and the metric socket. Slide the belt over the top of the tensioner pulley. Make sure that the belt is centered inside of the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the breaker bar until the tensioner pulley stops moving against the belt. Pull the breaker bar and socket off of the tensioner pulley.
- 6). Crank up the engine and let it run for about twenty seconds so that the new belt can completely seat to the inside of the two accessory pulleys. Inspect the belt as the engine is running to ensure that it does not slip out of the pulleys. Turn the engine off.
