How to Replace a Shifter Knob

    • 1). Purchase a shifter knob that is designed for your vehicle's make and year. Unscrew the existing shifter knob by twisting the knob counter clockwise until it is free of the gear shift rod. If the knob doesn't want to unscrew, do not force it. The shifter knob is likely attached to the rod with an Allen head fitting.

    • 2). Look at the underside of the existing knob for a small five-sided opening, if the knob did not unscrew from the gear shift rod. This opening may be located in the knob or the rod, depending on the design of the vehicle. Insert the proper sized Allen wrench into the opening. Make sure the tool is a tight fit. Turn the wrench counter clockwise and loosen the screw until you can lift off the shifter knob.

    • 3). Install the new shifter knob by reversing the steps you used to remove it. If your shifter knob is threaded, screw it onto the rod, turning clockwise. If your shifter knob attaches with an Allen screw, slide the knob over the gear shift rod then replace the screw. Do not to over tighten.
