Concrete Block Vs. Poured Foundation Walls
- Concrete block walls are made of hollow concrete blocks shaped like large bricks. The pre-poured bricks are then assembled on site and held together with mortar.
- Poured concrete walls are made of the same building material as concrete block foundation walls, but poured walls are made of solid, poured slabs of concrete. The concrete is poured in one or a few sessions, depending on the type of poured wall.
- Although the strength of the wall varies depending on its thickness, a poured concrete wall is generally stronger than a concrete block wall. This is because the concrete block wall is made of hollow blocks while the poured wall is filled all the way through.
- Adding reinforced steel to either wall can increase its strength and make it the better choice. If you have the option, always add steel rods to your foundation wall when you are building it. In some states, this is actually a requirement.
- Concrete block walls can be more difficult to repair than poured concrete walls. For example, when repairing a leak in a block wall, you will have to apply a layer of concrete plaster before you can seal the leak. This extra step is not necessary with a poured concrete wall.
