    • The protein diet has been greatly hyped by the popular Atkins Diet. This diet, which has been around for decades, promotes weight loss through eating a diet rich in proteins and by ridding the body of sugars and carbohydrates. The protein diet also has been used for those who are hypoglycemic and do not respond well to sugar.

    Alternative Uses of the Diet

    • The protein diet is not used just for weight loss. It also can be used for patients who are malnourished. It is also prescribed for those who have been burned or have a high fever and are in a hyper-metabolic state. The protein-enriched diet is also used for people who are going into or have completed surgery, as it helps with wound healing and can increase the body's natural resistance to infection. Diets high in protein also have the ability to help protect a person's liver from the affects of the anesthesia they were given in surgery.

    What can be Eaten

    • The protein-enriched diet allows many foods to be eaten. One of the biggest advantages for many people is that they can eat a lot of meats and fish, such as steak, chicken and pork, salmon and bass. Meats higher in protein, such as lamb, turkey and venison, also are recommended. Eggs, bacon and sausage are allowed as breakfast foods. Seeds are on the list as well, such as sunflower seeds, pistachios and peanuts.

      Fruits and vegetables can be eaten in moderation, and the dieter must be careful about the ones they choose. Acceptable ones are broccoli, celery, corn, bananas, papaya and cherries.
