Metal Glass Art Ideas
- If you are a glass blower, try incorporating metalwork into your design. Make a large glass ball with a hole or point at either end to work as an axle. Cut out the shapes of the continents from various types of sheet metal and join these to the glass globe. For an interesting effect, use metals which will oxidize in different ways and expose them to water and air after you have cut them to produce interesting colors and textures.
- Make a sculpture using repeated, simple forms such as a shoal of fish or flock of birds. Make a set in metal and a set in glass. Make them as identical as possible and arrange them so that one set is a reflection of the other. Alternatively, have them spiraling and coiling around each other just as flocks of starlings do. You could also mount the shapes on a mobile with arms which can rotate independently of each other.
- A simple project for incorporating metal and glasswork can be achieved by making a lantern. Paint a large glass jar with a selection of different colored glass paints. Cut patterns into a rectangle of sheet metal with a saber saw or tin snips. Bend the sheet of metal around the jar to form a lantern. This can stand alone or be mounted onto a wooden or metal stand.
- Glass and metal are perfect materials for jewelry making. Make your own glass beads or buy them premade and mount them onto wire shapes. Use colors which complement the color of the glass, for example bright copper wire around a strong green glass, or silvery steel wire around dark blue. Make little cages by winding the wire around and around and have the beads sitting loose inside the cage. Mount a hook on the top to create earrings.
