How to Retrieve the WPA Key

    • 1). Plug one end of your existing Ethernet cord into one of the slots marked "LAN" on the back of the router and then the other end into an open Ethernet port on the computer to connect the computer directly to the router. This step isn't required to access router settings if you already have a computer that's connected to the router wirelessly; just use that laptop or PC to proceed.

    • 2). Open a Web browser and enter your router address. The address is a four-part IP address that you can find with your router documentation. The common default router addresses include 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.0.1.

    • 3). Log in with your router administration user name and password. By default some routers set it as "admin" or "username" for the user name and "password" or "admin" again for the password. Check the documentation you used when you first set up the router if you don't know the login.

    • 4). Click the "Settings," "Preferences" or the similarly named option when you log in. This varies depending on your router model. Retrieve the WPA key from the "Wireless Security" or "Authentication" section of router settings. Press or check a box to display the code if it's concealed with asterisks. Save the WPA key in a safe place for future retrieval.
