How to Vote in Minnesota With a Change of Address
- 1). Fill out a change of address form at any U.S. post office. For registered voters, changing an address for mail service will automatically update voting information if the process is completed at least six to 10 weeks before election day. A green postcard will then arrive in the mail showing updated voter information including precinct number and polling place.
- 2). Apply for a new Minnesota driver's license or ID card. This will also give individuals the opportunity to either register to vote under the new address or automatically update the voter information and, as long as the change is made six to 10 weeks before election day, a green postcard will be sent.
- 3). Provide proof of new address on election day. If a green postcard did not arrive in the mail, or if the address change was not made prior to six to 10 weeks before election day, voters can still bring their proof of address change to their new polling location. Proof of residence includes: state issued driver's license or identification card, student or tribal identification card, utility bill or lease from landlord, or an oath made by anyone within the precinct that can verify your residency. State government websites can provide information regarding polling place locations, transportation information, and an exact list of proof of residency documentation materials.
