How to Repair a Leaking Gas Tank
- 1). Read your vehicle's owner manual to find the proper way to remove your gas tank. Remove the tank and drain any gas into an empty bucket or pail.
- 2). Cover all outlet holes of the gas tank with putty. Add in a pint of acetone and gently rotate the gas tank to coat the inside with acetone. This will help to dry up any moisture left in the tank. Rinse the tank and allow an hour to air dry.
- 3). Cover the entire gas tank with duct tape. This is to cover any holes. The entire tank will need to be covered since you may not be able to see pinholes that are causing leaking.
- 4). Mix the two parts of the epoxy sealer according to the instructions on the package. Do this in a plastic container. Typically, epoxy sealer needs to be mixed for two minutes. Pour the epoxy sealer into the gas tank.
- 5). Seal the hole of the gas tank with saran wrap and a rubber band. Spin the gas tank for a few minutes by hand to allow the sealer to coat the entire inside of the tank.
- 6). Pour out any sealer that is left after the tank has been coated. Allow the gas tank to dry overnight. With a knife, scrape away any extra sealer that coats the hole to the tank.
