How to Install a Corner Insulator on an Electric Fence

    • 1). Mark the desired location for the charged electric wire on your corner post with a pencil or marker; in most cases, the bottom wire should be 6 to 8 inches above the ground, with subsequent wires being 6 to 8 inches apart. Make a thin pencil or marker line just dark enough for you to be able to see it.

    • 2). Measure out a strip of 12.5-gauge electric wire long enough to wrap around the circumference of the corner post three and a half times. Cut the wire with a pair of wire cutters.

    • 3). Thread the length of electric fence wire through the centrally located hole on the terminal insulator. Pull the wire through the hole until the two lengths of wire on either side of the insulator are equal. Position the terminal insulator perpendicular to the corner post with the unused wire hole located farthest away from the post. Place the terminal insulator at the marked location on the corner post, positioning it so it's approximately 3 to 4 inches out from the post; this helps ensure that the charged wire doesn't accidentally make direct contact with the corner post.

    • 4). Wrap the two ends of the wire around the corner post. Rethread the wire through the hole in the center of the terminal insulator. Wrap the wire around the corner post two more times, and then tie the ends of the wire off on themselves to secure the wire and the terminal insulator in place.

    • 5). Thread the electric fence wire through the hole at the opposite end of the terminal insulator. If you use a notched terminal insulator, then you can simply put the electric fence wire in place by slipping the wire through the notch rather than having to thread it through the hole. Repeat this entire insulation process to secure each electric fence wire to each of the corner posts.
