Rustic Entryway Remodeling Ideas
- The front door should be the centerpiece of a rustic entry design. Visit an architectural salvage yard and find an old door with lots of character, such as a former barn door. Or use a piece of reclaimed wood with lots of character and refurbish it to create a new door. Don't be afraid of wood with burls, knots or embedded nails, as these elements only add texture to your rustic entry design.
- Add warmth and interest to your entryway by installing wood paneling. Use salvaged wood, or purchase new panels that are designed to look old with an applied patina. You can create a similar effect by white-washing existing panels and scraping away some of the paint to reveal the wood color beneath. If you are decorating on a budget, use paint on drywall to create interesting effects. Choose warm colors and use sponges to create the effect of old, weathered brick or stucco.
- Install a light fixture in your entry that delivers plenty of charm and greets your guests. Visit antique stores to find authentic vintage fixtures, and then rewire them to make sure they are up to modern electrical codes. If you prefer the convenience of buying a new fixture, look for designs that emulate the older look. Wagon wheel fixtures are a common choice for rustic spaces; also common are metal fixtures that feature wrought iron or bronze that has been hammered for an imperfect look.
- Once you have chosen the main materials for your rustic entry, take the time to select decorative touches to complete the look. Add a patterned rug to soften the space. Choose a wooden furniture piece to serve as a catch-all for purses, keys and mail. Hang rustic-themed artwork on the walls, such as paintings featuring landscapes or Western scenes.
