How to Make Preschool Crayons
- 1). Remove all the paper from the broken crayons, being sure that no small pieces of paper are left intact. If the labels are hard to remove, soak the crayons in a bowl of water for five to 10 minutes, then rub the labels off. Pat the crayons dry with paper towels.
- 2). Sort the broken crayons by color. Colors that are similar to each other such as denim, blue, and blue-green, can be grouped together, if you do not have multiple pieces of any color.
- 3). Place all the broken crayons from one color group inside a crayon impression in the jumbo crayon mold to determine if you have enough pieces to fill the crayon shape. If not, set those aside and try a different color grouping. Repeat this process until you have enough broken crayons to fill the impression on your jumbo crayon mold with a single color group.
- 4). Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 5). Tear off several inches of aluminum foil and fold it to create walls, like a miniature loaf pan. Pinch and fold the edges to seal the openings so that no melted crayons can drip while baking. Create one mini foil loaf pan per color of jumbo crayon you'll make. Pinch the top of one corner to make a mini spout for pouring hot wax.
- 6). Place all the foil loaf pans onto a cookie sheet. Place each of your selected broken crayon groups into its own pan; reds go in one pan, blues in another. Place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until the wax has completely melted. Turn off the oven and remove the cookie sheet using oven mitts. Set the cookie sheet on the stove.
- 7). Cover your work table with old newspaper and place the jumbo crayon mold on top of the paper. Spray the impressions in the mold with a thin layer of cooking spray.
- 8). Gently grab one of the foil pans while wearing oven mitts. Pour the hot wax into one of the jumbo crayon impressions until the shape is full. If any wax is left over, set the foil pan back on the cookie tray and let it cool. You can use it for another project.
- 9). Repeat Step 8 with all the other foil pans of melted crayon wax. Allow the jumbo crayons to cool for at least an hour; touch them to determine whether they're hard. If not, allow to cool until hard. Pop them out of the mold when hard.
