How to Install Duration Premium Shingles
- 1). Prepare the roof with tar paper as normal with shingle applications. Nail the starter roll along the base or eave of the roof. The starter roll is about 12 inches wide and serves as a base for the shingles being installed.
- 2). Determine the center of the roof and snap a chalk line from the center of the eave line to the ridge of the roof. This line should be perpendicular to the eave and will serve as a reference point for starting each course of shingle
- 3). Place two shingles, one on each side of the chalk line, with the bottom of the Duration Premium Shingle flush with the bottom of the starter roll. Nail the shingles in place. The Duration Premium Shingle has a wider area for nailing marked directly on the shingle. Apply four nails, one on each end and two equally spaced between, for each shingle. Continue placing shingles along the first course until the end of the roof is reached. Cut the shingle so approximately one-quarter inch hangs over the gable eave. If only a sliver of the upper reinforcing layer of the shingle remains, cut that as way as well. Small pieces will not adhere well enough to the roof.
- 4). Start the next course of shingles by centering a shingle on the centerline marked by the chalk line. Place the adhesive strip at the bottom of the back of the second course shingle so it contacts the adhesive strip in the nailing area of the shingle on the previous course. Continue placing the shingles in the course, keeping a straight line of the bottom edges.
- 5). Cut around any obstacles such as vents or chimneys. Keep the adhesive strips in contact with each other for all shingle placements. Finish the roof by applying a ridge cap cut from three-tabbed shingles. Use three-tabbed shingles from the same manufacturer to ensure a color match.
