    Identity and Age Requirements

    • One of the things you are expected to provide before you are granted the right to marry in Vermont is a valid means of identification. Certified copies of birth certificates are accepted, as are driver's licenses. In Vermont, you can get married at 16. However, if you under 18, parental consent is required.

    Residency Requirements

    • You do not need to be a resident of Vermont to be granted permission to get married there. If one person in the couple is a resident of Vermont, the couple must apply for a license in the town where that person lives. If both persons who wish to marry are non-residents, then they should seek a license in the county where they plan to get married.

    Time limits

    • The couple has 60 days after obtaining the marriage license to have the wedding ceremony. In Vermont, a licensed or ordained member of the clergy, a justice of the peace, an assistant judge or a judge of probate living in Vermont has the authority to perform your marriage ceremony. Also, a member of the clergy living in a state or country other than Vermont with proof of his or her religious organization's presence in Vermont can perform this ceremony. Anyone who is at least 18 years old can register with Vermont's Secretary of State to be a temporary officiant for the wedding.

    Other Information Required

    • The couple will have to complete a marriage license application. The application requires parental information, including the couple's mothers' maiden names. The couple also must give information about their race, number of marriages if any and how those marriages ended.
