How to Install 1963 Ford Futura Ignition Switch
- 1). Disconnect the two battery cables from the battery with a wrench, as the ignition switch carries a live current that could result in a serious electrical shock.
- 2). Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder, then turn the key to the left until it reaches the "ACC" position, as noted on the metal bezel which surrounds the lock cylinder.
- 3). Insert the tip of a bent paperclip or stiff wire into the small hole on the face of the lock cylinder. Push the paperclip or wire towards the ignition switch, then rotate the ignition key to the left until the key switch pops out of the lock cylinder. The paperclip or wire is necessary to release a small metal catch piece that holds the cylinder in place.
- 4). Disconnect the ignition switch from the dashboard. Hold the back of the ignition switch from underneath the instrument panel. Grasp the front of the key bezel with the other hand and keep it steady. Twist the ignition switch in a counter-clockwise direction to disconnect the switch from the dashboard. The key bezel will also disconnect from the dashboard.
- 5). Disconnect the wiring loom from the back of the ignition switch. Note that a threaded rod protrudes from the center of the back of the ignition switch. Attached to this rod is a single wire held in place with a nut. Remove the nut with a wrench, then pull the wire off of the rod. Take care not to loose the small metal washer underneath the tip of the wire. With the nut and the wire removed, the wiring loom can be removed. The loom plugs into the back of the ignition switch. Pull the loom off of the switch to disconnect it. The loom is pressed on at the factory, and may take a little effort to remove.
- 6). Plug the wiring loom into the back of the replacement ignition switch. Slide the small metal washer over the threaded rod at the back of the switch, followed by the single wire. Tighten the nut over the tip of the wire with a wrench until the nut is snug.
- 7). Position the ignition switch against the back of the opening within the dashboard, then place the key bezel against the front of the dashboard. Twist the ignition switch in a clockwise direction until the tabs on the back of the key bezel click into place on the front of the ignition switch.
- 8). Insert the lock cylinder into the ignition switch with the ignition key turned counter-clockwise by approximately 1/8 of an inch past the "ACC" position on the key bezel. Once the lock cylinder is flush against the front of the ignition switch, turn the key in a clockwise direction until the key reaches a vertical position then remove the key.
- 9). Reconnect the battery cable with a wrench.
