Melapak – the Guna Milaap for marital compatibility
Guna Milaap is based upon position of the Natal Moon in specific Sign and Constellation. There are 8 specific features, assigned to the Moon with respect to its position in a specific Sign and/or Constellation, which are used or judging the compatibility for marriage between male and female . These are Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Grih Maitri, Gana Maitri, Bhakoot and NaaDi.
After finding these specific features in both the charts, matching is done on each factor to find the overall compatibility among the male and female. Each feature is assigned with points to be added in accordance with the level of compatibility found after comparison. The maximum number of points for each feature is as under:
Let us now discuss each of the features to understand the concept.
Varna – Varna is related with Astrological Caste of the person. The basic inclination of mind is decided on the basis of the Varna being occupied by the Moon in the natal chart of the Native. There are four Varnas (Astrological Caste) i.e. Kshatriya (warrior), Vaishya (Commercial community), Shudra (Service Class) and Brahman (Teaching Community). These four Varnas are further classified in superiority order i.e. Brahman(Teacher) is the supreme among all. Thereafter, Kshatriya (Warrior), Vaishya (Commercial community) and Shudra (Service Class) come in descending order of Superiority. In the table given below, we can find the Varna (Astrological Caste) of a person on the basis of the Sign occupied by the Moon in his natal chart.
Table - 1
The position of the Natal Moon of both the male and the female is compared to know the compatibility on the basis of Varna. In order to know the Varna compatibility between two charts, there is only one condition. The male must have the Superior Varna in comparison to the Varna of the female.
The following chart can be used to easily determine the compatibility between male and female on the basis of Varna (Astrological Caste).
Table -2
For example, let us check the compatibility between following:
James – male born on 17th June 1982 having natal Moon of 3:46 Degrees in Aries Sign and Ashwini Constellation.
Mariya – Female born on 5th November 1983 having natal Moon of 16:12 Degrees in Libra Sign and Swati Constellation.
Then, because James-male Natal Moon is in Aries, the Varna (Astrological Caste) of James is Warrior, which is second from the top. And Mariya-Female natal Moon is in Libra, that is, the Varna (Astrological Caste) of Mariya is Shudra(Service Class), which is third from the top.
Therefore, the Varna of the male is superior to the female and hence James and Mariya are compatible to each other on the basis of Varna. And, one point is earned on male-female compatibility.
The next scale of compatibility is Vashya which is based upon the living conditions of different life forms on earth namely the Biped (Human – walks on two feet), Quadruped (Animals –walk on four feet), Reptile (move by crawling), insects, and Watery creatures. The following table explains the Vashya of the Moon when placed in different signs in the Natal Chart.
Table – 3
To check the compatibility among the male and female on the basis of Vashya, the following table can be used. The total number of points in Vashya Compatibility is two.
Table – 4
In our example, the male i.e. James has got his natal Moon in Aries, which is a complete Quadruped sign; and Mariya has got her natal Moon in Libra, which is a complete Biped sign. (see table – 3 ). Now, if we see the compatibility in table – 4, we find that compatibility between the male quadruped sign and female biped sign is zero. That is, the match is not compatible on Vashya basis and hence zero points are added.
Next is Tara (Constellation) compatibility. There are total 27 constellations in the following order of numbering.
Table – 5
In order to find out the Tara Compatibility among the male and female, we have to count the constellations as under:
For male – Count the number of constellations from the constellation occupied by the Moon of the male to the constellation occupied by the Moon of the female. Then divide it by 9, the remainder will be the Tara of the male.
For female – Count the number of constellations from the constellation occupied by the Moon of the female to the constellation occupied by the Moon of the male. Then divide it by 9, the remainder will be the Tara of the female.
In our example, we have Ashwini i.e. Constellation number 1 for James; and Swati i.e. Constellation number 15 for Mariya. Counting from Ashwini to Swati gives us number 15. By dividing it by 9, we get the remainder number 6 which is the Tara for James. For getting the Tara of Mariya, we will count from Swati to Ashwini and we get the number 14. By dividing it by 9, we get the remainder number 5, and this is the Tara for Mariya.
Now to check the compatibility among the two, the following table is to be used.
Table – 6
Now, when we check the compatibility between James and Mariya on the basis of Tara, we find that James-male Tara being 6 and Mariya-female Tara being 5 gives us the compatibility of 1.5 points out of total three points. And, we add 1.5 to our compatibility, which now becomes 2.5.
The Fourth level of compatibility is check on the basis of Yoni i.e. sexual compatibility among the male and female. It is of total 4 points and is based upon the matching of the Constellations occupied by the Moon in the charts of the male and female. The following table can be used to find the Yoni assigned on the basis of the position of the natal Moon in a specific Constellation | Nakshatra.
Table – 7
And, thereafter the compatibility can be checked with the help of the table given below. As a general rule, the compatibility among the following is zero.
Table – 8 (part – 1)
Table – 8 (part – 2)
In order to check the compatibility in our example, first we need to find out the Yoni of James and Mariya with the help of Table – 7. As James is having his natal Moon in Ashwini Constellation, his Yoni is Ashw (Horse). Similarly, the Yoni of Mariya, having her natal Moon in Swati Constellation will be Mahish (Buffalo).
By looking at the table 8, we find that the compatibility among Horse and Buffalo is zero; therefore, nothing will be added in the compatibility.
Example – Compatibility between James and Mariya
Next compatibility to be checked is Grih Maitri i.e. Planetary harmony. This is based upon lord of the sign occupied by the Moon in the natal chart. The following table – 9 will tell us the lord of the sign occupied by the Moon in the natal chart.
Table – 9
Thereafter, we have to check the level of compatibility between the male and the female. The total number of points in this compatibility is five. The planetary friendship among the planets is given below in table – 10.
Now for example compatibility between James and Mariya, first we need to see the lord of the sign occupied by the natal Moon in both their charts. James natal Moon is in Aries, whose Lord is Mars; while the natal Moon of the Mariya is in Libra, ruled by Venus. Now, we will use the table – 10 to see the compatibility and we find that out of total 5 points of compatibility, James and Mariya have got 3.
Example – Compatibility between James and Mariya
The next scale of compatibility is matching the Gana Maitri. For the purpose of compatibility between the male and the female, the total 27 Constellations | Nakshataras have been divided into three categories i.e. Rakshasa (Demon) , Manushya (Human) and Devta (God) as given in the table – 11 below.
Table – 11
The compatibility criterion among those three Gana is very simple. Rakshasa (Demon) Gana is compatible with itself only. The Manushya (Human) Gana is compatible with Devta (God) Gana and vice-versa. The Devta Gana is compatible with all but the level of compatibility is very low with Rakshasa (Demon) Gana. The following table is useful while finding the points on Gana matching.
Table – 12
Now to check the Gana compatibility in our example, first we need to find the Gana of James and Mariya. The natal Moon of the James is in Ashwini Constellation|Nakshatra, therefore, as per table – 11, the Gana of James is Devta. Similarly, we find that Gana of Mariya, having natal Moon in Swati Constellation|Nakshatra is also Devta. By checking the compatibility table – 12, we find that James and Mariya have got full compatibility of 6 points.
Example – Compatibility between James and Mariya
The next is Bhakoot Matching which is based upon the relevant position of the sign occupied by the Moon in the natal charts of the male and the female. To find out the Bhakoot matching, the following table – 13 is to be used.
In our example, James is having Aries as his natal Moon sign, while Mariya is having Libra as her natal Moon sigh. And, as per the Bhakoot table – 13, the matching points for both of them are 7.
Example – Compatibility between James and Mariya
Now, the last compatibility of NaaDi is of utmost importance. This is based upon physical and spiritual structure of the male and female; and is calculated on the basis of the Constellations occupied by the Moon in the natal charts of male and female. For NaaDi compatibility, all 27 Constellations|Nakshatras have been divided into three Categories viz. AaDi NaaDi, Madhya NaaDi, and Anta NaaDi. Any disharmony in NaaDi compatibility can cause severe problems in the marriage.
For knowing the NaaDi of the native, the following table – 14 is useful.
The matching of NaaDi is done on the basis of following table – 15. The most inauspicious situation is when both the male and the female are having Madhya NaaDi.
Now, we will be finalizing the compatibility in our example. James is having his natal Moon sign in Ashwini Constellation|Nakshatra and, therefore, as per table – 14 his NaaDi is AaDi NaaDi. Mariya is having her natal Moon in Swati Constellation|Nakshatra and her NaaDi is Antya NaaDi. And, as per the table – 15, the matching points for both of them are 8.
Example – Compatibility between James and Mariya
Therefore, now we have understood as well as analyzed one example to have absolute clear understanding of how Melapak i.e. marital compatibility is checked between the male and female.
The minimum points required in Melapak are 18, below which the compatibility is negative among the male and female. And, the positive compatibility is must in Bhakoot and NaaDi; otherwise, despite having 18 points, the match will not be auspicious for the couple. In my next article, I will discuss about the functionality of Melapak. www.birthchartastrology.com

And, thereafter the compatibility can be checked with the help of the table given below. As a general rule, the compatibility among the following is zero.
- Cow and Tiger
- Horse and Buffalo
- Dog and Deer
- Lion and Elephant
- Monkey and Sheep
- Rat and Cat
- Mongoose and Snake
