Peach Tree Damage From Rabbits
- Horizontal tooth marks on tree trunks usually mean that rabbits have gotten to them. The tooth marks can be identified by their irregular pattern and size. They range between one-quarter inch to three-eighths inch wide. Occasionally, rabbits will also gnaw on exposed roots.
- Peach trees with rabbit damage may be more susceptible to insect infestations, disease, cold and drought. A tree may recover from slight rabbit damage. However, if the bark is removed around the entire trunk down to the flesh of the tree, the damage is usually fatal.
- The most effective method of preventing tree damage by rabbits is placing a fence at least 36 inches tall around the tree. Fences made of chicken wire work well because rabbits can't crawl through them.
- Wrapping the peach tree trunks with a commercial tree wrap or a heavy aluminum foil deters rabbits, provided the wrap extends at least 36 inches above the highest ground or snow level.
- Rabbits feel safe in areas with tall grass or weeds and heavy brush. Clearing a perimeter of at least 100 feet around the peach trees discourages the rabbit population.
