Questions to Ask When Designing a Room
- Perhaps the most important part of any room design is its inspiration. Many people who are remodeling a room -- as well as interior designers -- start with an inspiration object. If you're doing the room yourself, ask what could serve as an inspiration piece. Perhaps it's something you already have and love -- a painting, a piece of furniture or even a throw rug. Perhaps it's a find at a thrift shop. Answer this question, and build your design on your inspiration piece.
- The overall design theme of a room can usually be described in one word or phrase, such as contemporary, rustic, eclectic, modern, traditional or country. Ask yourself what kind of theme you want for your room. It will drive many of your decorating choices, from wall colors to furniture.
- Once you have your inspiration piece and know the theme you're using, you will have to decide on materials. Ask yourself what materials go with the particular theme you've chosen. While chintz and beadboard go with a country look, glass tiles and stainless steel work with a contemporary look. If you don't feel confident, consult an interior designer, who can help you with your selections.
- The overall cost of designing a room is often the determining factor in just how much work you can do. Ideally, in the planning stage of a project, you will have three figures; one for your dream remodel, another for a moderate remodel and a third for an inexpensive redo. Ask yourself what you can afford, and set a budget. This is another area in which it might pay to consult an interior designer. She can probably tell you where you can cut costs.
