    • 1). Open your GE freezer and inspect the compartment. If it is overly warm, evidenced by food that doesn't freeze or remain frozen, or there is buildup of frost, then your sensor is likely broken.

    • 2). Unplug the power cable to the refrigerator.

    • 3). Locate the defrost sensor. In your side-by-side model, the sensor will likely be located on the back wall inside the freezer. It will be wired to the defrost heater and will be covered by a panel.

    • 4). Remove any racks or objects that are in the way of the sensor panel.

    • 5). Remove the screws holding the panel in place with your Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6). Unplug the two wires leading from the sensor to terminals in the refrigerator.

    • 7). Remove the screw holding the sensor assembly in place and remove the assembly.

    • 8). Turn on your multimeter and set the front dial to the "R X 1 ohms" setting.

    • 9). Touch each of the two multimeter lead wires to the wires on the sensor. If you removed your sensor from a cold freezer, the reading on the multimeter should be 0. If you removed the sensor from a warm freezer, the multimeter should read infinity. If any other reading is produced the sensor is damaged and needs to be replaced.
