Thiazide Diuretics for Systemic Arterial Hypertension
An argument continues to exist as to the best drug to use initially for systemic arterial hypertension. The argument is highlighted in a recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. The interesting documents are tucked away in the section of the journal labeled "Editors' Correspondence." Houston says no to the question and Moser says yes.

After reading the 2 opposing views, I favor the view of Moser. I believe that a thiazide diuretic is the first-choice drug for the treatment of systemic arterial hypertension. The drug is cheap and its side effects are easy to discover. The popular approach using other, more expensive drugs was created by advertising. The more expensive, highly advertised drugs for hypertension should be added if thiazide diuretics fail to control the blood pressure.
