The Railroad pocket watch is a welcome addition to any man's pocket watch collection.
The Railroad pocket watch was created because of a little accident that happened on April 19, 1891.
A train engineer's watch stopped for four minutes and in this very short span of time an accident happened, which claimed the life of nine people in Kipton, Ohio.
Because of this tragic event, a new standard was created for pocket watches to be used on all railroads.
Standard railroad watches had at least 30 seconds accuracy, had a white dial, at least 15 jewels, black Arabic numbers, 16 to 18 in size and temperature compensated.
Some manufacturers of worker still did not follow the rules and it would not be rare to find railroad watches with Roman numerals instead of Arabic numbers.
Of all the requirements, the most critical were temperature compensation and the five positions adjustment.
Cold and heat affected the movement of the watch, as well as the position of the watch.
The railroad pocket watch has a great appeal to collectors.
Their faces may be plain but they have great value.
They also have such a great quality.
Railroad watches are amazingly very affordable.
An antique gold pocket watch in good condition can be bought for as low as $400.
However, collectors today might find that the prices have gone up a little because of the increasing demand from collectors all over Asia, North America and Europe.
Two manufacturers produced the most number of railroad watches, Elgin and Waltham.
The Hamilton Company made just less than 5 million watches.
They may be less in number but they have great quality.
Starting a collection with railroad watches is a great way to begin.
Railroad watches are not only durable and made of high quality materials; they are also a reminder of the great history of the past.
