The Pros and Cons of Asphalt and Fiberglass Roof Tiles

    Pro: Cost

    • Asphalt shingles, even the more modern fiberglass construction, are significantly cheaper than most other products on the market. The cost per 10 x 10 square runs between $50 and $150 as of publication, a number which is approximately half the cost of wood shakes, concrete or ceramic tiles.

    Pro: Easy Maintenance

    • Once installed, asphalt shingles require very little care or maintenance. An annual check of the roof will aid in replacing any loose, damaged or missing tiles, a simple step which will prevent minor problems from becoming serious and costly. There is no sealing or other additions required with asphalt shingles.

    Pro and Con: Durability

    • Traditionally, asphalt shingles will withstand exposure to cool temperatures better than hot temperatures. This trait has been improved with the fiberglass models. These shingles are still prone to thermal shock, damage which occurs when temperatures change rapidly in a short space of time. It is important to have proper ventilation and drainage on an asphalt roof, as prolonged exposure to moisture will cause the tiles to break down faster, shortening the lifespan of the roof. It is important to remember that no roofing material is ideal for all weather conditions. Extreme weather is the most significant factor in material selection and is the main cause of premature aging. Prior to making any selection, consult with a local roofer or home repair professional for guidance.

    Con: Lifespan

    • In roofing, the cost of a product is usually directly related to its lifespan. The more expensive, the longer it will last. This tends to be true with asphalt, even when manufactured with fiberglass, as its low cost comes with a maximum 20- to 30-year lifespan, significantly less than many other modern products. An additional problem is the look of the asphalt as it ages, which tends to detract from a home’s appearance sometimes years before replacement is necessary. Flaking, chipping and similar problems are fairly common, particularly if drainage is poor.
