What is that Name in the Favicon Space?

You may have noticed a new feature that appears sometimes when you browse in Firefox. The favicon no longer has just the icon, but it also includes the title of the website with a blue or green background.

Jeff asked me:
I've noticed that favicon has changed since I started using it. Clearly I've missed the bus on this one and would love to learn more about the new W3C standard and about how to implement the site name with the icon as I noticed Vanguard doing (https://personal.vanguard.com/us/home).

The screen shot here shows the Vanguard URL and how it's displayed in Firefox. As you can see they have their favicon, then the words "The Vanguard Group Inc. (US)" and then the URL window has their full URL.

The Favicon Hasn't Changed - The Browser Has Changed

What has changed is not the favicon, but the Web browser itself. Now Firefox and other modern browsers will display site identity information right in the URL window of the browser. This makes it easier for customers to see at a glance if a secure site has a valid security certificate.

Secure Sites - Get More Information

If you click on the green text, Firefox will open a pop-up window displaying even more information about the site in question. And if you click on the more information button, you'll get even more information about that secure site.0

How Do You Get Your Site Name There?

To get your site name to display in that location in Firefox, you need to set up a secure server and get a certificate from a verification service like Verisign.

The best way to do this is through your Web hosting provider. But you can also go to Verisign and sign up for their secure site options. To get the green address bar logo, you need to buy an "EV" option.

All the modern browsers display site identity information in the URL bar. But they all display it slightly differently. As you can see from the screen shots above, Internet Explorer shows the verification information rather than the site's name.

This is the screen you would get if you clicked on "More Information" from the Firefox pop-up. As you can see, it tells you a lot about how the site is secured as well as what privacy concerns there might be.
