How to Build Patio Steps From Pavers

    • 1). Clean the area where you want to build the new step. Sweep and make sure the area is free of dirt and dust to provide a clean surface for the adhesive to grip too.

    • 2). Before you adhere the step in, do a dry run to make sure you like the step placement. Place the three blocks on the ground centered with the door. Then place the two remaining blocks on top of the others with the middle of the top blocks directly over the seams of the bottom blocks.

    • 3). After determining where the steps should be located. Remove the blocks and apply a line of concrete adhesive on the existing patio where the blocks will be set. The line of adhesive should cross back and forth under the area where the pavers will be sitting to provide enough hold to keep the blocks in position.

    • 4). Place the three blocks back into position carefully lining up the seams and edges. Step pavers have fairly clean edges so you should be able to butt each paver closely to the next one.

    • 5). Add another line of cement adhesive on top of the three blocks careful not to apply adhesive where the top blocks will not cover it. Again make sure the adhesive covers the area where the two blocks will be sitting to provide a strong connection.

    • 6). Place the two top blocks on the three lower ones, again making sure the centers of the top blocks line up with the seams of the bottom blocks.

    • 7). Allow the blocks and adhesive to set for about two hours and then fill the seams with the filling sand if needed. Depending on the type of paver you used, you may not need to add sand to the cracks if the seams are butted up closely to each other.
