    • 1). Decide on the type of block and wood you want to use. Cinder blocks come in various shapes and sizes, and can be solid bricks as well as blocks with the centers cut out. Wood boards come in numerous thicknesses and lengths, and you need to choose something that you feel complements the decor in your home. Purchase the material, or find it on a job site.

    • 2). Place two cinder blocks on the outside edge of your shelf at the distance you wish. Place a board on top of the cinder blocks. Adjust the two blocks until you have your desired look and feel. For example, some people want the blocks at the outermost ends of the board, while others choose to inset the blocks 6 inches or so. Use a third block in the middle if you think you need it for support.

    • 3). Build additional layers as you need. Block and board shelves are very sturdy, although if you go higher than three rows, you will likely want some form of vertical support, such as a wall that the shelves can rest against for additional stability. Stack each additional layer on the layer beneath it.
