DIY Cut Small Stencils
- 1). Select a stencil sheet on which to trace a pattern. Mylar sheets are found in craft stores and are a good weight for stencils. Small stencils can be cut from used plastic jugs, such as gallon milk containers. Cut a flat portion from the jug and wash and dry the plastic.
- 2). Purchase a pattern designed for a stencil from a craft store. Designs can be purchased in books or individually.
- 3). Place the pattern on a solid, flat surface. Use masking tape to secure the pattern to the surface. Place the plastic sheet over the pattern and tape the sheet into place. Use a fine-tip felt pen to trace the pattern outline onto the plastic sheet.
- 4). Place the traced plastic sheet onto a cutting board or other hard flat surface. Use a crafting knife to cut along the outline on the plastic.
- 5). Remove the plastic sheet from the cutting board. Examine the cut line for edges that could interfere with the finished look of the painted stencil. Use the knife or an emery board to smooth the edges.
