How to Build a Shoe Bench
- 1). Place the four 24-by-18-by-¾-inch plywood on a worktable. Measure from one 18-inch edge and make a mark at 7¼ inches. Then measure from that mark and mark ¾ inches.
- 2). Measure from the last mark and make a mark at 7¼ inches and then ¾ inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw a line across the width of the plywood. Repeat this on the other three pieces of plywood. Theses are the ends of the shoe bench cabinets.
- 3). Apply glue to the 18-inch edges of the 10-by-18-inch pieces. Place them between the 24-by-18-inch pieces on the lines drawn in Step 1 and secure them with the finish nails.
- 4). Drill three countersink holes in the 1-by-1-inch lumber, 1-inch from each end and the third in the center. Apply glue to the opposite edge from the countersink holes, place it level with the first 7¼-inch mark and secure it with the drywall screws.
- 5). Place the 28½-inch piece of plywood on the worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at 10 inches. Repeat this from the other end as well. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the plywood. Next, apply glue to the 18-inch edge of the 7¼-by-18-inch plywood, place them on the lines and secure them with the finish nails.
- 6). Apply glue to the tops off the 1-by-1-inch pieces. Move the two cabinets close enough to allow you to place the 28½-inch plywood on the 1-by-1-inch material. Drill pilot holes with the 3/16-inch drill bit and secure the plywood to the 1-by-1-inch material.
- 7). Apply glue to the top edges of the shoe bench. Place the 51½-by-18-by- ¾-inch plywood on top of the shoe bench and secure it with the finish nails. Next, place the 51½--by-24-by-¼-inch plywood on the worktable.
- 8). Turn the shoe bench so the 18-inch depth is vertical. Apply glue to the edges and place the ¼-inch plywood on it. Secure the ¼-inch plywood to the shoe bench with the box nails.
