How to Burn a Tree Stump With a Barrel
- 1). Check with your local ordinances for laws prohibiting the burning of tree stumps. Check for local restrictions or permit requirements. Large cities like New York may require that all stumps be removed by the Parks Department, with whom an appointment and request for removal must be made.
- 2). Clear the ground around the tree stump of debris and all things flammable to prevent the fire from spreading and cinders from igniting and blowing around in the wind.
- 3). Allow the stump to dry as long as possible before attempting to burn it. Some moisture will remain in the underground portion of the stump no matter how long it dries but allowing as much as possible to be removed will help in the burning process.
- 4). Remove both the top and bottom of the a five-gallon or larger metal barrel or drum with a hack saw. The barrel should now be in the form of a cylinder.
- 5). Make holes in the side of the barrel or drum using an ax or the back side of a claw hammer. These holes will allow for the free flow of air to feed the fire.
- 6). Place the barrel or drum over the stump. Place kindling and charcoal inside the drum and sprinkle it with lighter fluid. Light the fire inside your drum or barrel with a match. Allow the fire to burn until the stump beneath the barrel has been eliminated. If there is any wood remaining repeat the process until it has been incinerated.
