How to Size Youth Motorcycle Helmets

    Getting the right fit

    • 1). Plan on spending at least an hour at a motorcycle shop. This will give you enough time to try on enough helmets to find the right one.

    • 2). Measure the circumference of the child's head at its widest point. This is usually above the eyebrows. The measurement will give you the size range to look for. A store clerk can help you locate the sizes on the box.

    • 3). Try on helmets that match the needed size range. To do this, you must first remove anything that might impede a proper fit, such as earrings, a hat or hair clips.

    • 4). Make sure the visor is up, exposing the inside of the helmet.

    • 5). Help the child grasp the chin straps with both hands, holding the helmet with the visor facing away from them, and pull the helmet down over their head.

    • 6). If the child's nose or chin is touching the helmet, then the helmet does not fit and you need try a different size or brand. If the helmet swivels from side to side or top to bottom, the helmet is too large. The helmet should be snug, but comfortable.

    • 7). Wear the helmet around the store as you browse. The added time will enable you to determine if the helmet will be comfortable on long rides. It should not cause you discomfort. Helmets are cut differently based on brands.
