How to Drill Through Cinder Block

    • 1). Mark and measure the area you want to drill. This will vary depending on the reason for the hole. For instance, if you're drilling the hole in order to hang something, you need to consider the size of the object you're hanging and the method you plan on using to hang it. Make sure your measurements are accurate before drilling, because once the hole is made, there's no clean and easy way of taking it back.

    • 2). Load the rotary hammer drill with the appropriate beveled drill bit. Larger bits will make a larger hole while smaller bits make a smaller hole. You want a strong steel or diamond coated drill bit designed for heavy duty use with a rotary hammer drill and for drilling harder materials such as concrete and stone. You want to use a rotary hammer drill because it is a powerful tool designed for drilling concrete.

    • 3). Align the bit with the marked area on the wall and slowly begin drilling the hole. Be careful not to drill too fast; you don't want to risk cracking the cinder block wall. Drill slowly and be patient; rushing this job will do more harm than good.

    • 4). Remove the drill from the hole. Clean the area around the hole to see that it is the proper size. If the hole is too small, you can make it bigger using a larger drill bit.
