How to Recover an Orphan File
- 1). Download Glary Utilities. Glary Utilities is computer software that is used to keep the system clean and running smoothly. It can also be used to recover deleted files. You can download the program for free by clicking the Resources link (see below).
- 2). Click the "Download Now" button in the middle of the page, then when prompted, select "Save File." This will begin the software's download.
- 3). Open the file once it has completed the download. Click "OK" and "Run" in the pop-up windows. The Glary Utilities Installation Wizard will now load. Click "Next," then following the remaining prompts to finish the software installation.
- 4). Open Glary Utilities by double-clicking the new icon on the desktop. (If there isn't one, select "Start," then "Programs" and "Glary Utilities.") Click "Modules" and "Privacy & Security." From there a list of possible selections will appear. Select "File Undelete."
- 5). Search for the orphan file. If you can remember its original location, select just this folder in the "Search" bar. If you can't remember, select the entire drive. Click "Search" and Glary Utilities will begin its scan of the computer. Once this is complete a composite list of all the recoverable files will appear. You can either sift through these manually or if you remember the actual name of the orphan file, type it into the "Filter" bar. This will bring up only files with the same name or file extension.
- 6). Pick the orphan files you want to recover and click the "Restore" button in the lower right corner of the window. The files will now be recovered and placed back in their original locations on the computer.
