How to Graft Two Citrus Trees

    • 1). Harvest the budwood from the desired tree. Remember that the budwood should be the variety of tree that is desired with regard to fruit and foliage. For example, if Texas grapefruit is desired, then the budwood should be from a Texas grapefruit tree. Budwood should always be harvested between April and November, as during this time the bark of the tree is slipping. Trim the budwood to 12 inches long and use a sharp knife when cutting off the branches to avoid damaging the underwood.

    • 2). Make a 1 inch vertical cut through the bark of the rootstalk stem, roughly 6 inches above the soil line. At the bottom of the vertical cut, make a horizontal cut to create an upside down "T".

    • 3). Use the sharp grafting knife to cut off a bud from the budstick. Cut off the bud roughly 1 inch above the budline. The cut should be diagonal and made with one clean stroke.

    • 4). Slip the budstick inside the "T" with the stick facing upward.

    • 5). Wrap the graft with grafting tape starting at the bottom. The tape should completely cover the graft and be tight enough to prevent it from falling off. Leave the tape in place for at least five weeks. Remove the tape once the incision appears mended and new growth is forming.
