Many people only associate post traumatic stress disorder with injuries or horrific experiences usually experienced while at war.
And while experiencing or fighting in a war is one of the leading causes of post traumatic stress disorder, there are many other causes.
Any type of trauma or event that is life-threatening or inflicts emotional stress can cause PTSD.
This can be from fighting in a war, experiencing a severe accident, being a victim of kidnapping or torture, living through a natural disaster or terrorist attack, or any other form of abuse that causes severe emotional stress.
Victims of these events can often be haunted or tortured daily by the memories that can keep them from living a normal life.
Post traumatic stress disorder often makes the victim feel afraid and unsafe for days, weeks, and years after the traumatic event is over.
It can manifest in certain cases after rape, mugging, assault, or robberies whenever there was physical or sexual abuse.
Symptoms of PTSD PTSD can affect a person for years after a stressful or traumatic event, and while the severity of cases varies from person to person, the majority of victims will experience at least one of the following:
  • Flashbacks, feeling like the event is happening again
  • Constant feeling of worry
  • Trouble sleeping or night terrors
  • Anger problems
  • Depression
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Avoidance of certain people or places
Most patients aren't diagnosed with PTSD until the symptoms severely affect their personal relationships or daily activity and continue for more than a month after the incident.
