How to Caulk Windows Inside & Outside
- 1). Remove the old caulking from around the windows. Insert the edge of a utility knife or putty knife into a corner of the caulking. Pry the caulking loose and grasp it between your thumb and index finger. Gently pull it free from the window.
- 2). Clean the area with soap and water to remove the old caulking residue and other dirt and grime. The new caulking adheres better to a clean surface and this provides a better seal.
- 3). Purchase caulking and a caulk gun at the local paint or home supply store. Latex caulk works well for windows and it is easy to work with. You will need interior caulking for the indoor windows and exterior caulking for the outdoor windows. Exterior caulking is more durable and can stand up to harsher temperatures and sunlight.
- 4). Cut the tip off of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle. Place the tube into the caulk gun. Press the trigger to start the caulk flowing and release the trigger to stop the caulk from flowing. Practice a couple of times if you have never used a caulk gun.
- 5). Hold the caulk gun up to the left hand corner of the top of the window. Pull the trigger and move the caulk gun across the top of the window towards the right hand side. Release the trigger a few inches before reaching the right hand corner. The caulk will continue flowing flowing for a couple more seconds.
- 6). Gently run your finger across the caulk line. This helps to smooth the line and press it more firmly in place.
- 7). Clean your finger and the tip of the caulk gun with a damp rag. Repeat the procedure for the other sides of the window and then move on to the next window.
