How to Lay Hardwood Flooring Around Doorway Molding
- 1). Measure the thickness of the wood floor planks, using a tape measure.
- 2). Mark the measurement on the door casing molding with a pencil on both sides of the molding. Elongate straight lines, using a straightedge. Measure from the floor to the pencil line at each side of the molding to ensure an accurate and even height.
- 3). Place a pull saw or back saw up to the line and cut through the molding. Reposition the saw as necessary to avoid cutting into the substrate. Place a scrap floor plank up to the molding to use as a guide while cutting.
- 4). Sand the rough edges from the freshly cut molding, using medium-grit sandpaper.
- 5). Place the floor plank under the cut molding to check for proper clearance. If the fit is too tight, sand away any excess molding with coarse-grit sandpaper. Sand the bottom of the molding again with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth it.
- 6). Remove the cut piece of molding. Lay the hardwood plank on the subfloor and nail it in place.
