How to Sew Thin Nylon

    • 1). Insert a new No. 9 or No. 11 sewing machine needle into the sewing machine. Thread the machine using nylon or silk thread. Loosen both the top and bobbin tension, but not enough to impede the production of a solid satisfactory stitch.

    • 2). Set the sewing machine's stitch length to medium (10-12 stitches per inch). Nylon seams look better when there are fewer stitches per inch. Set the sewing machine to make straight stitches if you're constructing short seams and to zig-zag if you're constructing long seams. At side seams, construct French seams.

    • 3). Place the fabric under the pressure foot and begin feeding the fabric into the machine. Prevent the nylon from pulling down into the holes of the needle plate and the nylon thread from drawing back during the first initial stitches by holding the ends of the spool and bobbin threads in your left hand taut behind the presser foot. Afterwards, release the spool and bobbin threads and use one hand to gently stretch the nylon from just behind the presser foot as the other hand guides the nylon over the feed dogs. If making French seams, place the wrong sides of nylon together and sew a straight seam on the right side using a medium length stitch and a narrow seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance to prevent raw edges from showing on the finished seam. Turn the seam to the wrong side and sew a second seam approximately 5/16-inch from the fold.
