If you are unsure of how or where to find help, the detox center should be able to give you some referrals.

    • 4). Learn new behaviors. When you combat a long-standing pattern of addiction, it is important to replace those behaviors with new ones. Habits are formed through repetitive practice, so you will not be cured of your of bad habits right away. The change will be hard, but surrounding yourself with others who exhibit positive behaviors will help you make those changes. You will not be able to hang out with old friends when trying to stay sober. Find new friends who share your new interests.

    • 5). Join a support group. For those with substance addictions, such groups as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous have meetings at all hours of the day and night. These programs also offer sponsorships for new members. Your sponsor is a person who has been in recovery for a long time who will help you through the process.
