Invisible Fencing Splicing Instructions
- During initial installation, when a section of wire requires replacement or when making changes to the location of your invisible fence, two ends of the underground wire need to be spliced together. The splice must be waterproof to prevent problems with the operation of your invisible fence.
During initial installation, it is easy to find both ends of the wires to join them together. When making changes to the location of your invisible fence, locate the section, or sections, of wires to cut and move. Lay the wire in position for the new layout before making the necessary splices.
When your fence has a break, purchase a break locater to find the damaged section of underground wire. Turn off the invisible fencing before digging up the damaged section to avoid risk of shock or damage to the system. Dig up the damaged section with a straight shovel by following the wire and creating a V shape in the sod and soil with the edge of the shovel.
Cut each side of the damaged section of wire and remove, and cut a length of invisible fence wire to fit in the space before splicing. Allow 6 to 8 inches of overlap on each side of the new wire so there is enough to splice the wires together. Push the new wire into the groove in the soil where the old wire was removed. Press the soil and sod back over the newly installed wire, but leave about 3 feet on either side so there's enough wire out of the ground to splice the wire. - An invisible fence splicing kit contains a wire nut and a connector capsule filled with a gel that coats the wires so they do not get damage by moisture. Each end of the two wires needs to have the insulation stripped about an inch from the end with a pair of wire cutters. Twist the ends of the wires together, and push them into the wire nut. Turn the wire nut like a screw cap and the wires will tighten together in the wire nut.
Open the lid of the gel-filled container, and push the wire nut with the wires all the way into the capsule so the gel coats the wire nut and the stripped ends of the wires. Close the cover on the capsule to seal in the gel and the ends of the wires. Put the capsule into the ground and covered it and the wire with soil and sod.
