    • 1). Make a crochet swatch to ensure you have correct gauge. The wrong gauge can cause a beanie made for an adult to fit a child's head. For this pattern, 17 single crochet (sc) equals 3 inches and 8 rows equal 2 inches.

    • 2). Make a slip knot with your yarn. For round 1, chain two stitches (ch 2) and crochet 10 single crochet (sc) in second chain from hook. Place a yarn marker, if using, to mark the start of the crochet rounds for your beanie.

    • 3). For round 2, crochet 2 sc in each sc around. In round 3, start increasing the width of the beanie by crocheting 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, then 2 sc in next sc, and so on so that you have 2 sc in every alternate stitch. For round 4, crochet 2 sc in next sc and 1 sc in next 2 sc all around. For round 5, crochet 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc. This will increase the width of the beanie all around.

    • 4). Crochet 2 sc in next sc and 1 sc in next 4 sc for round 6. Once you finish this round, crochet 2 sc in next sc, and 1 sc in next 5 sc all round to complete round 7. For rounds 8 and 9, crochet 2 sc in next sc and 1 sc in next 10 sc. This balances the width so that the beanie has structure.

    • 5). Crochet one sc in each sc for rounds 10 and 11. For round 12, crochet 2 sc in next sc, and 1 sc in next 10 sc. Crochet one sc in each sc from round 13 to 17. The yarn marker will help you count the rows so that you get the correct number.

    • 6). Crochet 2 sc in next sc and 1 sc in next 15 sc for rounds 18 and 19. For rounds 20 to 31, crochet one sc in each sc all around. This will add height to your beanie. Once you finish round 31, fasten off the yarn by inserting the hook into the last stitch and pulling the yarn through to make a knot. Tighten it and make another regular slip knot and cut away the excess yarn.
