    • 1). Grab the electrical cord for your Phillips DVD player and pull it out of the outlet. Plug a different electrical device into that socket to see if the outlet is working. If it's not, check the circuit breaker to make sure it's in the "On" position and the fuse is not blown. Plug the DVD player into a different outlet if the socket doesn't work.

    • 2). Look at the expiration date on the batteries in your remote control. Replace old batteries and use the remote to see if it works properly. Hit the "On" button to see if the batteries were the problem.

    • 3). Remove the DVD that you are trying to play. Insert a different DVD and see if the DVD player reads the new disc. If the new one works, there may be something wrong with your first disc. Clean the disc with a soft cloth. If neither one of the discs works, the optical drive or motor may be old and worn out.

    • 4). Turn your television on and make sure it's on the proper input. Hit the "Input" button on the television or remote to change to the DVD source. Consult the television manual if you are not sure what the proper channel or input is to view the DVD. If you do not have the manual, search through your channels, auxiliary channels and inputs to see if the movie is playing on one of them.

    • 5). Position your Phillips DVD player so you can see the back of the unit. Unplug the cables that run from the DVD player to the television. Reinsert the colored prongs are in the corresponding places and push on the connectors to make sure they are in the holes completely. Do this on the DVD player and the television.

    • 6). Press the "Eject" or "Open" button on the remote or on your Phillips player. If it doesn't open, unplug the unit and use a small headed flat head screwdriver to gently pry between the door and the unit. If you loosen the door, clean the area with rubbing alcohol and a clean washrag. Allow it to dry, and plug the unit back in, and open the door again. Something sticky may have gotten between the unit and the door. If it now opens, that was the issue. If not, the motor that opens and closes the door may be worn out.
