How to Make Gloves From a Wool Sweater

    • 1). Felt the sweater (it must be pure wool) by putting it in the washing machine. Use hot water and a warm dryer cycle. Exposing the wool to heat and water agitates the fabric and causes it to stiffen, or felt, creating a more durable fabric suitable for mittens.

    • 2). Create a pattern of both hands using a piece of paper and a marker. Keep your fingers together, your thumb extended to the side and your wrist straight. Round out the top of the pattern to create a true mitten shape, and add a half inch to the edge, all the way around the pattern, for the seam.

    • 3). Turn the sweater inside out and lay the patterns on it. Use the marker to trace the pattern. Pin the two layers of fabric together and cut the pieces out.

    • 4). Draw a "sewing line" all the way around each of the pinned mitten pieces; it should be about 1/2 inch from the edge. This line is the mitten's seam. Sew the pinned pieces together, carefully following the sewing line.

    • 5). Remove the pins from the sewn mittens.Turn the mittens right side out and try them on. If they're too loose, you can turn them inside out again and add an additional seam.
