Scott?s energy comes from the sun. He is constantly soaking in solar energy and converting it into the energy that comes out of his eyes.

Scott uses a pair of ruby quartz sunglasses to prevent the force blasts from randomly shooting out as he lost the ability to control his optic blasts in a plane crash long ago. In combat, Cyclops uses a visor to control his blasts. He must push a button on the left or right sides to rotate the ruby quartz plates and allow the energy to come out.

Interesting Fact:

Scott?s father did not die in the plane crash in his youth. Instead, Scott?s father Major Christopher Summers was captured by Shi?ar aliens and later became Corsair of the Starjammers.

Origin:

As a boy, Scott Summers lost his parents in a tragic plane crash. His mother pushed Scott and his brother Alex (Havok) out of the plane with the only parachute. Unfortunately, the parachute caught on fire and Scott hit his head, putting him into a coma and caused brain damage. Alex was adopted and Scott spent months in a coma, only to be sent to an orphanage when he awoke.

Later, Scott?s mutant powers awoke to devastating effect. It would seem that the brain damage he suffered from the plane crash affected his ability to control his mutant powers. Scott unleashed a torrent of energy and blasted a crane apart and onto a crowd. A subsequent blast from Scott saved the crowd, but instead of praise, Scott suffered their anger and fear as they tried to pursue him. Scott fled and was eventually approached by Charles Xavier.

Charles asked Scott to become the first in his new school for gifted youngsters. Scott accepted and as Xavier has said, ?You will be the nucleus?around which I shall build the group!? Since that time, Scott has proven himself to be that nucleus and leader for the X-Men.
