    • 1). Prepare your painting surface. Lay newspaper or a drop cloth to cover a large working area. Outside works best on a non-windy day. Cover the chair with a drop cloth or newspaper, securing it with tape. Hang the hanger on the chair and secure it with tape. You can use another piece of furniture to hang the hanger as long as the hanger can be secured.

    • 2). Prepare the chain for painting. Detach the chain from the purse with pliers. Work slowly and deliberately as too much force can cause the chain to break. Sand the surface of the chain, removing any old flaking paint and creating a grip for the new paint to hold onto. Wipe the chain off with a degreaser or denatured alcohol to remove any oils.

    • 3). Attach the chain to the hanger with the clothespin. This allows the chain to hang freely so the paint will not pool or set unevenly. Spray the chain with spray primer, allow it to dry for a few minutes before applying a second coat.

    • 4). Spray the chain with the metallic paint. Shake the can for 2 minutes to ensure it is mixed well. Hold the can 12 inches away from the chain and spray in smooth, sweeping motions to ensure a smooth application with no drips. Allow the first coat to fully dry then apply a second coat. If the gilding is not as saturated as you'd like, apply a third coat once the second coat dries.

    • 5). Let the chain dry for a few hours before re-attaching it to the purse.
