How to Remove Old Sealant Around a Bathtub
- 1). Apply a caulk removing solution directly to the caulk. The solution comes in a tube that allows for easy application directly through the tip of the tube. This kind of a product will be especially helpful if you are removing caulk from a surface such as marble that can scratch easily with scraping tools. Allow an hour for the solution to work into the sealant.
- 2). Take a utility knife with a new blade and begin to slowly remove the caulk from the tub. A majority of the caulk should easily separate from the tub surface with no harm done to the tub.
- 3). Remove the excess debris with a putty knife by working the knife along the edge of the tub. Go in small sections, and do not repeatedly work the knife over a problem area. If you come across a difficult area, then approach it from the top instead of the side.
- 4). Use a stiff brush to clean up the remainder of the sealant left behind. Mineral spirits can be used to help loosen and small particles that remain.
- 5). Use a sponge to wash the mineral spirits and any remaining sealant particles away. After washing the area, use a towel to dry it so you can begin the next phase of your re-caulking project.
