A larger, full size canister vacuum is not suitable for everyone, so it's nice to see that Dyson has introduced a mid-size canister model for those looking for a compact, lightweight vacuum. Keep reading for my evaluation below.

How the Dyson® DC47 Performed:

The DC47 is a mid-size canister vacuum which offers a lightweight choice for those who cannot pull a heavy vacuum around. It is sized between the tiny Dyson City and the full-size canister DC39.  This canister vacuum comes with practical tools including a multi-floor air-driven turbine tool, plus the Tangle-free™ tool (amazing tool), a stair and combination dust/crevice tools.

While there are some trade-offs for the compact design compared to the full-size DC39, such as a 2” narrower cleaning path, a shorter 16.4’ cord, a much smaller dirt bin (0.15 gal), it’s still a very powerful vacuum for cleaning your whole home.

According to Dyson and their suction power scale, this model supposedly has less suction power than their full size canister model. But during my test, I couldn’t find the DC47 lacking at all suction wise. In fact, suction is this vacuum’s best feature. It’s amazing to see floor debris being pulled into the tool’s path. So plenty of power to pull in allergens, pet hair and dander, as well as dust/dirt from crevices and flooring grooves.

This incredible suction did make it harder to push/pull the turbine floor tool on certain rugs, till we used the trigger button on the handle (a quick fix) to enable a gentler suction. I was able to clean flat entrance mats with full suction, as well as carpeted areas. Some rugs have a tighter weave (less air flow) which can make a difference when vacuuming.

The turbine floor tool has an awesome 90° swivel that makes it easy to get into corners. Cleaning under furniture worked well with this tool. The Dyson Tangle-free tool (included) is a must for pet owners; it works great on stairs and upholstery, but too small for floors. The small stair tool also included is difficult to move around on carpeted stairs; I prefer it more as an upholstery tool.

As for handling, the Ball design is awesome, the vacuum follows very easily and turns on a dime, but it can occasionally tip over if the hose is turned a certain way. That can be a drag and is the main reason for the downgrade in rating. If you can overlook the tipping aspect, you'll enjoy this canister model. The compact nature makes it easy to carry to another level, but when doing stairs, because of the shorter cord, you may have to bring it along with you.

Overall vacuum performance is very good and I do like this model. I could easily replace a full-size vacuum with this lighter model. However, those with a large home may not like the narrower floor tool and shorter cord, which could translate into more time to get the job done. And those with several pets may need to empty the dirt bin too often to make it a practical choice. For those homes, the DC39 full-size Animal or Multifloor would be the better choice.
