What Are the Benefits of Rubber Flooring?

    Impact Resistance

    • Rubber flooring is soft and resilient, making it the ideal flooring choice under playground or gym equipment, on basketball courts and for running tracks. The surface cushions impact, reducing the risk of injury to falling bodies or running feet. It's also used to cushion areas used by horses, for example, stalls, walls and wash bays, to lessen the impact of horse hooves and prevent impact and slip injuries.

    Sound Absorption

    • Rubber is an excellent material for sound absorption. Footfalls will be nearly silent, and any kind of sound waves will be absorbed instead of reflected, reducing the cacophony even in a large room. While rubber flooring does not ensure 100 percent soundproofing, it is one of the best choices on the market for sound reduction. Rubber can also be installed under a wood floor to add extra cushion and sound reduction.

    Non-Slip Properties

    • Even in wet areas around pools or play-in fountains, textured rubber flooring remains non-slip, making the area safer. Some types of rubber flooring exceed the minimum standard set for allowed slippage, called the "coefficient of friction," by 80 percent or more.

    Fatigue and Static Reduction

    • Rubber is a great surface for areas where people must stand for long periods of time. Cushioning reduces fatigue and foot injury. In addition, it does not produce static buildup, making it a great choice for restaurant kitchen and bar areas.

    Durability

    • Durability--how well the floor stands up to daily use--is an important consideration, especially in high traffic areas. Rubber flooring is very durable and long lasting, with an expected lifespan of 15 years, but it could last much longer. Even in a high-impact area, like a gym where weights are routinely dropped, rubber flooring does not mar or tear. Rubber floors are also stain resistant, dirt repellent, resistant to chemicals, low maintenance and easy to clean. Basic maintenance includes sweeping and mopping with any household cleaner; wax, finish or special solutions are unnecessary.

    Design

    • Rubber comes in a huge variety of styles, colors and textures, including poured rubber for awkwardly curved areas. Colors can be combined to create team logos and delineated floor areas, to mark track distances or simply to create a unique design.
