How to Fix My Troubled Marriage

    • 1). Communicate with your spouse about your desire to heal the marriage. It is important to make sure that both partners are committed to making things work. Marriage, after all, requires the commitment of two people.

    • 2). Discuss what exactly is troubling the marriage and record what you come up with. Write the results in a journal so there is no confusion about which problems need to be fixed.

    • 3). Refrain from placing blame on one spouse or the other. Assigning too much blame to one person instead of realizing that both people have things they need to work on to heal the marriage is damaging to the relationship.

    • 4). Tackle one problem at a time. Staying focused on one problem at a time will allow for that problem to be fully resolved so that it does not resurface later.

    • 5). Tell your spouse when he does something that makes you happy, but don't be afraid to tell him when he does something that makes you upset either. Learning to talk about progress and setbacks in your marriage is an important stage of the healing process.

    • 6). Join a couple's activity, such as a bowling league, a book club or a cooking class, depending on your interests. Commit to attending the activity together each week. It is important to make alone time a priority in a marriage.

    • 7). Consider counseling. Trained therapists can help mediate the situations that you and your spouse cannot agree on alone.
