Panoramic Sunroof Safety
- A panoramic sunroof is available in several styles. It may be completely fixed or have operable panels. It is possible to combine a fixed and an operable panel in the same sunroof. A panoramic sunroof may be completely transparent or opaque.
- Because safety is a concern for any part of a vehicle, a panoramic sunroof is a transparent single layer of glass that has been treated for strength and durability -- usually by being tempered or laminated. DuPont produces Spallshield, a plastic composite used to treat sunroofs that the company says can provide eight times more performance under impact while decreasing sunroof by weight by up to 30 percent. The Spallshield composite is designed to keep the glass shards in place if the glass breaks.
- The installation of a panoramic sunroof, or any sunroof for that matter, is best left to professionals. A panoramic sunroof can often be ordered as an option on a new vehicle. If you cannot order a sunroof for your vehicle, aftermarket sunroofs can be installed at most accessory shops.
