How To Mount Hardware for a Plywood Sign
- 1). Mount a sign from a wooden beam or pipe using chain to hang it at the appropriate height as outlined in step 3. Purchase enough chain to hang your sign from the overhead support at each end of the sign. Buy enough to wrap twice around the support as well. Make sure your chain is rated to carry at least 50 percent more weight than the weight of your sign. Every rope and chain is weighted for a specific weight-tensile strength--that is the best indicator when choosing a chain for hanging signs. Signs weighing 50 pounds or more should be professionally hung, for safety reasons.
- 2). Drill two 3/8-inch holes through your sign 2 inches in from each corner and 1 inch from the top. Attach the end links of each piece of chain to the sign by placing the last link over the hole. Fit one 3/8-inch flat fender washer on a 3/8-inch bolt 1-1/2 inches long, slide it up against the head, then pass the bolt through the last link in the chain and the hole in the plywood sign. Place the second washer on the bolt, add a 3/8-inch nut and tighten. The wide fender washer should sit flat against the chain, preventing the bolt from pulling through. Repeat for the other side using your second piece of chain.
- 3). Wrap the chain around the pipe or beam and adjust to the proper height. Use the threaded links to attach the loose ends of the chain together. Be sure your chains are even so that your sign hangs level. Adjust the height as needed; make it clearly visible with enough room underneath for traffic.
- 1). Mark the wall where you want your sign. Hold the sign in place and mark the two bottom corners.
- 2). For vinyl, wood or metal-sided structures, locate and mark studs in the wall. For masonry, follow the instructions in Steps 3 through 5.
- 3). Drill 1/8-inch holes in each corner of the sign, at least 2 inches in from the edge, 1 inch in from the top and bottom, ensuring that, for vinyl, wood or metal siding, you drill your holes in line with the studs. For masonry wall, drill ¼-inch holes.
- 4). Hold the sign in its position. For vinyl, wood or metal siding, drive 3-inch treated deck screws into the studs in each pilot hole position. For masonry use a 3/8-inch mason's bit to drill through the pilot holes in the sign and to mark the face of the wall about 1/8-inch deep.
- 5). Drill pilot holes in the masonry where they are marked, using the 3/8-inch mason's bit, to a depth of 2-¾ inches. Blow the dust from the holes and attach the sign using ¼-inch by 2 ½-inch Tapcon-style concrete screws.
